Meet the Society: 2021-2022

The McMaster Neuroscience Society (MNS) is a student run organization that is committed to enhancing the neuroscience program experience for each student. The MNS gives the opportunity to all of its executive members to work in collaboration to organize academic and social events that embody the interests of neuroscience students. We hope to spread the word about this program to the McMaster community and illustrate the integrative nature of this field that fosters innovative and fascinating neuroscience research.

MEET THE SOCIETY:

Vivian Lo, Co-President

Hello all! My name is Vivian and I’m returning as one of your co-presidents of the McMaster Neuroscience Society. Outside of school I enjoy listening and making music (alto sax squad for life!), baking, crochet, sewing, and all the other typical grandma hobbies. While we can’t physically see each other during this virtual year, please always feel free to send me a message and strike up a conversation! I can’t wait to meet you all (whether virtually or in person) and hopefully talk your ear off about my various furry friends and their escapades.!

Vishal Pandya, Co-President

Hello people! I’m Vishal, and I’ll be heading into my fourth year in the neuroscience program at Mac. This year, I’ll be one of your VP internals, alongside Aliza. These past years have been some of the best years of my life. I’ve had the opportunity, and the privilege, to learn some of the coolest things and meet some of the best people. I’d like for you guys to enjoy university as much as I have. Aliza and I hope to keep your neural networks intact so that together, our neurons could keep pop-pop-popping

Joseph Oluwasola, VP Academic

Hello everyone, my name is Joseph. I’m grateful to have been chosen as this year’s VP Academic. I am in my fourth year of the Neuroscience program, with a personal focus on clinical neuropsychology. Outside of university, I mostly workout, drink excessive amounts of coffee, hike, and learn about niche topics. If you’re ever in need of advice or just want someone to talk with about your academic plans, I am here to help however I can.

Minarose Ismail, VP Admin

My name is Minarose Ismail and I am so excited to work with the McMaster Neuroscience Society as VP Admin. I am in my fourth year of neuroscience and I’m working on machine learning for neuroimaging at the McMaster Performance Science Lab. I enjoy animating, listening to podcasts and watching animated movies –  my current favourite is Into the Spider-verse. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns! Can’t wait to meet everyone!

Gracia Abboud, VP Finance

Helloo !! My name is Gracia, and I am going into my fourth year. This year I will be the VP finance again, managing the MNS’ money. My role as VP finance is mostly behind the scenes but I am looking forward to meeting everyone ! I am excited about this year and the little in person activities that are coming back! When I am not studying or working, I am napping or watching TV shows ( if you have any recommendations, they are highly appreciated 🙂 ). I spent the past summer wandering around Hamilton, and I got familiar with plenty of cafes and eateries. Please feel free to reach out, even you just want to chat!!

Cadence Opoka, VP Promotions

Hi everyone! My name is Cadence, I am a third year neuroscience student and will be the VP promotions for the MNS for the 2021-2022 year. I am currently interested in cognitive neuroscience as well as neuropharmacology with a particular interest in genetic neurological disorders. Currently I am working as a physicians assistant to help with his integrative neurological medicine and family practise. I’m a big fan of baking, thrifting, hiking, and most of all, chatting with other people so always feel free to stop me and say hey if you see me on campus!

Natasha Szulist, VP Fundraising

Hey everyone! My name is Natasha (I also go by Tash or Tasha) and I’ll be your VP fundraiser for this school year. My job is to find ways to make some money for the MNS so we can put on fun events for our cohort! When I’m looking for ways to procrastinate you can find me watching YouTube, TikTok, playing or listening to music, and occasionally attempting to cook. Looking forward to making this year count and I hope you guys are too, feel free to shoot me a message anytime!

Layla Bakaa, Co-VP Internal

My name is Layla and I am one of the VP internals this year! A little about me is that I am entering my third-year in the Neuroscience program and pursuing a minor in Justice, Law and Order. I am a strong advocate for life-long learning and hope to explore a career in research. Ever since first year I have been involved in research and currently am working in the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact. Outside of academics, I enjoy travelling, spending time with family and friends and binge watching TV during high stress weeks. I am excited to work alongside the MNS this year to support our neuro community. If you have any questions or want someone to reach out to, feel free to contact me:)

Rebecca Lee, Co-VP External

My name is Rebecca, and I am one of the VP Externals this year! I am currently a third-year student in the Neuroscience program. I decided to specialize in neuroscience because I’ve always enjoyed math, psych, and each branch of science. The interdisciplinary nature of neuroscience means that I’m not limited to studying just one subject. Outside of school, I enjoy knitting and I occasionally play piano when I am bored. I also really enjoy listening to The Weeknd, Bryson Tiller, and PARTYNEXTDOOR. I’m not sure where I’ll end up with this neuroscience degree, but I just want to be happy and living my best life!

Sarthak Anand, Co-VP Internal

Hi everyone, My name is Sarthak, and I am one of your VP Internals for this year, alongside Layla. I am currently in my third year of the Honours Neuroscience program and with this degree, I hope to pursue a career as a Neurosurgeon or Neurologist one day, simply because of how fascinating the field of neuroscience and medicine is. Besides neuroscience, I also immensely enjoy programming, going on long drives, trying out new food and spending time with friends whenever I can. Feel free to reach out to me if you ever need some advice or need someone to talk to! I am soo excited to work with the MNS and hopefully see all of you lovely people soon!
